Other projects

I did a consultancy project (but the website isn't mine) for The Joseph Rowntree Foundation which they said was "fascinating and fantastic". In my early days I did www.scarboroughdag.org.uk which required lots of accessibility consideration, I notice they've updated it themselves now (which was part of the specification), so some of what you see is mine, some not.

Notable university work

VRML - 3D on the Internet

A particularly interesting piece of university coursework was my VRML (Virtual Reality Modelling Language, an XML application) 3d picnic scene. It has flapping butterflies (modelled on a Purple Emperor I think), you can hear their wings flap in stereo as they fly past, a viewpoints menu (you can view the scene as if you are one of the butterflies, or hide between the candles and listen to the butterflies), a radio which you can turn on to hear music that I wrote and played (click the red dial), flickering candles, and a movable 'swat'. You'll need the Cortona viewer plugin for your browser, download that first, then go here to view the scene. You need to practice a bit to get the hang of the navigation but you can basically fly around the scene. All my own work, including the music and the background photography. Anyway, the point is to illustrate the possibilities of 3D graphics on the Internet.

A neural network for predicting share prices

For my third year project I developed a neural network to predict share price movements, in the Java programming language. I got 84% for that project and won the G B Cook prize for the 'best project' out of 122 students across all the computing departments of the University of Hull, demonstrating my ability to devise, design and successfully implement a complex project over a long period, even if it's in a knowledge area that's new to me.
